Supported File Types List - Unofficial
I don't know if anyone else has tried this lately, but I can't play a ".rec" file (after renaming to ".mpg" ) on the Wiz any more - I'm sure I used to be able to... ?? ("Anatomy" on SBS, recorded on the toppy & saved across to PC)
So I converted it to m2p using ProjectX, tried again - it played, but it was moving as if it was on FF - the video was whizzing along (no pun intended!) and no audio of course...
What am I doing wrong? Is this due to FW ~261?

You could try MPEG Streamclip and use the Convert to TS option. It's shouldn't take long.
I've found that it will convert REC files to TS format, but the fast forwarding is a little tricky (though with ABC you might not need it that much).
You could also try Convert to TS with MP2 Audio or just plain old MPEG and see how that goes.
Hi Matt,
I have MPEGStreamclip, but every time I try to load anything it locks up & won't respond; I've tried upgrading it to V1.2 but it's no different; I've also followed the advice for disabling relevant graphics acceleration to address this, but no joy.... no other programs have any problems, so I don't know what else to do to get this working.
I'll try the other stuff soon, very busy with a few other priorities just now....

Interesting as that hasn't been my experience though renaming at least still saves you from converting them all.alwayslooking wrote:I've found the sound often doesn't work just renaming them.Gully wrote:As Tony has already posted, why bother?
Renaming to .TS works perfectly here without any need to process the files or convert them.

I'm not sure why audio doesn't always play, maybe it needs to be passed to an amp to decode? It'd be great to have an option to be able to connect to ftp devices, then you could play files on the wiz from a ftpd-topfield enabled topfield. I'm sure many have thought of this before.
Maybe that's the key as I am using audio via an amp.alwayslooking wrote:I'm not sure why audio doesn't always play, maybe it needs to be passed to an amp to decode? I don't have one setup on the wiz atm.
I guess it needs some further testing.

I have tried Anatomy - renamed to .TS, also .MPG, no go at all, unrecognised format - re-coded to m2p using projectX, runs at about 2x speed. also have Kenny's World recorded on the Toppy in HD ( hadn't updated JustEPG ini for the channel change ) - tried the same things with it, it runs 1/2 speed...... The de-muxed m2v file runs OK but no sound, of course as it's demuxed.... (I have both amp & stereo RCA out to TV connected)
I'm damned if I know what to do about it, short of changing the FW back a few revisions.
Cheers,

huh, demuxed means the audio is seperate from the video, of course you won't get sound with that. You need to remux it back into a single program stream file to get audio of course. Use mplex (with a windows gui is the version I use) for HD files, or imago MPEG Multiplexer (nicer interface) for SD files.

......yeah, that's what I expected - the demuxed file is the only one without sound, the others have sound but it doesn't come through because of the speed - when I "skip" within the Kenny's World file, as it resumes it will give resume at the correct speed, with sound, for a fraction of a second until it reverts back to 1/2 speed again...... I'm trying to implement Matt's suggestions but having trouble getting the file to recognise where I have ProjectX located (it's where it should be but isn't being recognised for some reason.
EDIT: forgot to mention that I couldn't remux the m2v because the sound was AC3 only and haven't downloaded anything yet that lets me re-mux AC3 (I've authored it to a VOB/DVD file but won't be burning it until I have more of the series)

WOMBLE http://www.womble.com/products/dvd.html will mux video and audio (AC3, MPA, MP3, Wav etc). I really believe anyone who regularly makes archive copies of DVB transmissions the 2 essential programs are ProjectX and Womble. These 2 programs are my mainstays and I never have sound or DVD burning problems. It will also demux, multiplex, do format conversions, has a MP4 exporter etc. has a scene detector, a ad finder that you can configure for a change of audio level, add in titles and import 2 audio tracks for easier editing.

mp4? 3gp? H.263?
Hi, my smartphone (HTC TyTN II) records video in what it says is either MPEG4 or H.263 format (user selectable). It stores the MPEG4 format in files with a .mp4 extension. I haven't yet tried to see what happens when I set the format to H.263.
Until today I've been unsuccessful in playing these .mp4 files on my PC. A nice person in a forum suggested I change the file extension to .3gp and hey presto the files now play on my PC (with QuickTime).
However, my S1 (with 261 FW), for the files when named .mp4, will play the video, but no sound comes out. When I rename to .3gp, the file is not visible in the file list on the S1, i.e. it disappears!
Any ideas?

Ahh, AVR. You find with some low bitrate stuff, the Wiz will send low sample frequency PCM (when it decodes the low sample frequency audio in the media file) which some AVRs can't decode.
So are you hooked up with SPDIF? Can you wack a couple of analogue leads in there also and see if switching to analogue helps?
Regards

I don't seem to be able to play wav files @ 44.1Khz ex CD see my complete post at http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/phpbb2/viewt ... 6463#46463
I notice in the first post of this subject Dave has included wav up to 48Khz. So i'm wondering why I can't get any audio from standard CD wav files...

I've got a collection of avi files I created from Toppie recordings of Rage. The video (XVID) plays fine but there's absolutely no audio. I ran some of the files through Media Info and the audio is 352.8 Kbps 44.1 KHz 2 channel ADPCM.
1. Does anyone know why this doesn't work on a P2 (FW patched to 280)?
2. Can anyone suggest a quick and easy tool to use to convert just the audio of these files (ie, I don't want to lose any video quality by re-processing it)?
In case you're wondering, I picked ADPCM ages ago when I couldn't get decent results by encoding the audio with mp3. Guess I just didn't have the right codec at the time or something.

I converted a couple of my music files that are Windows PCM 44.1kHz to ADPCM using CoolEdit Pro and the resulting files wouldn't play on the Wiz - unsupported format came up. So my guess is any video format that has ADPCM will play the video part and not recognise the audio. This particular codec is fairly old and indeed I haven't heard any mention of it's use on forums like CDFreaks, Videohelp.com or Doom9 recently so maybe you should consider demuxing the video's, recoding the audio to MP3 or Windows PCM and then remux. Maybe Videohelp.com might be able to recommend an utility?Donno wrote:I've got a collection of avi files I created from Toppie recordings of Rage. Ian - it's definitely not volume levels - I checked that. Audio setup is analogue connections to my 11 year old non-digital surround sound receiver, so not much to go wrong there. I forgot to mention that other avi's (XViD & DiVX) play fine.
Netmask - I'll have a look at Videohelp.com . Since posting I have played with Quick Media Converter (Cocoon Software) and the latest Auto GK. QMC, once I worked out some reasonable advanced settings, seems OK but I think it's still re-encoding the video (it takes enough time, anyway). As you suggested, if all else fails I might have to go down the demux path.

Surely .rec should be added. They will play if the file is renamed to .ts etc
Many BW owners have come from the Toppy community and this would be something that could make life a little easier for those users who still use their Toppy.
Would it be a simple change?
Is there some petty bloody-mindedness involved?

Interesting comment about litigious possibilities I wonder where Womble would be placed since it now recognises .rec format so you can open Topfield files directly (actually you always could if you renamed them to TS or MPG) but the Womble addition of .rec was to accommodate a digital still photo format whose suffix is also .rec A happy coincidence that maybe BW could consider allowing .rec to be recognised for digital still camera files of course......

MPEG Streamclip also claims to handle .REC files (I've never used it; I don't have an SD Topfield).netmask wrote:Interesting comment about litigious possibilities I wonder where Womble would be placed since it now recognises .rec format so you can open Topfield files directly (actually you always could if you renamed them to TS or MPG) but the Womble addition of .rec was to accommodate a digital still photo format whose suffix is also .rec A happy coincidence that maybe BW could consider allowing .rec to be recognised for digital still camera files of course......
Of course, they may have more problems with a competitor than with people who they might see as providing a useful adjunct to their product.
However, I'm not sure what the grounds for any such litigation might be.

On a purely technical basis, there is no grounds for litigation. The .rec files are a normal partial transport stream with a few kB of proprietary data at the start of the file. Adding support for .rec files is as simple as not ignoring .rec file extension and also ignoring the first few transport stream packets that contain Topfield specific information.
However, I believe that the corporate history / culture may be more of an issue. It is no secret that some of the people who work at Beyonwiz used to work for Topfield. Similarly, some of the Topfield people used to work for Humax.
I made a suggestion to Beyonwiz on how to add support (including technical details) and it was met with a bizarre response that I could not quite understand. Perhaps that was due to something being lost in translation. Anyway, Beyonwiz do know that users have asked for .rec support and they know how to implement it. If they chose not to do so, they probably have a reason.

My understanding from postings (as I've said, I don't have any .rec files) is that the Beyonwiz can already play .rec files. They just have to have their name changed to something that the Beyonwiz recognises as a media file extension. The technical capability is there, it's just not made convenient to use.

avi sound conversion
As a very recent P1 purchaser, I have just had this issue. Not sure if you found an easy way to re-encode the sound without re-processing the video, but the way I did it was I used good old Virtualdub (current version 1.88 http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/) with the LAME Mp3 plugin (version 3.98.2 ACM codec from http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-dshow-acm.php - only needed if you want to convert the audio to MP3).Donno wrote: ..ADPCM.
2. Can anyone suggest a quick and easy tool to use to convert just the audio of these files (ie, I don't want to lose any video quality by re-processing it)?
Virtualdub can do 'direct stream copy' for the video or audio (or both) so it doesn't re-process anything you don't want.
There are a few tutorials around for Virtualdub, but simply you need to:
1. Open the avi
2. Under Video menu select 'direct stream copy'
3. Under Audio menu select 'full processing mode'
3. Under Audio menu select 'Compression' and pick your new audio format (eg. LAME Mp3 44khz, 128kb, etc)
4. Save as new avi file.
That's it! No re-processing of the video and very easy. Of course, Virtualdub can do a lot of other editing as well if you play around with it.
Astro.
That works a treat Astro. Did a couple of files (music clips) using the UI to sort out the settings, tested on the BW (no problems), saved the settings to a vcf file, then 10 minutes playing around with the command line stuff to build a batch file to do the whole directory. Too easy!
Thanks for the tip Astro.

There are a couple of mkv types that still give it problems. The release notes of each f/w revision tell you one of the types (1080p mkvs). Also mkv's with particular audio streams (dts? dunno) can give it issues, or multiple audio streams.
Handbrake (or equiv) analyse your mkv and let us know what it's details are.

Here's the list of media file extensions I extracted from the Beyonwiz firmware that are probably recognised by the firmware. There's no direct indication whether a given extension is recognised as video, audio or image.

I played a .ts file downloaded from the web and it played fine (not perfect slightly slower than normal speed but only barely) but it had the following problems:
> no file time length
> no skip
> no FF,RW
> stopping the file made it recommence from the start of the file
The download source was TV 720p (probably NTSC)
Playing at any speed less than normal was also okay.
Any ideas about the missing parts particularly the time length. I've had that problem before with an MKV when went out of sync from a few seconds in or played at an excruciating slow and soundless speed.

Run MediaInfo on the file and post the log. Would provide helpful information. http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

Try remuxing it to a .m2ts file with TSmuxer. Should fix all those problems although the skipping may not be accurate. eg. may skip foward 15 secs instead of 30 secs.fredofrog wrote:I played a .ts file downloaded from the web and it played fine (not perfect slightly slower than normal speed but only barely) but it had the following problems:

In TSMuxer you can also force it to write frame rate info into the new m2ts file (if you were having speed issues with the .ts file). Check the "change fps" box and enter the framerate shown when you examine the file with Mediainfo.
