DP-P2 PSU is dead - how do i get recordings off the HDD?

Post by Recusant » Sat Oct 29, 2016 17:57

Hiya,

My old P2 has finally died and i need to get the recordings off it. It won't power up so i need to remove the HDD to do it. What format is the HDD? (ext?).

Any tips?

Thanks.

The recording HDD in Beyonwiz DP series is formatted as FAT32 with 512kB cluster sizes. That cluster size is considered illegal by Windows, so somewhat ironically, you can access it on Linux and OS X, but not on Windows.

The HDD can be read on a Beyonwiz T series, but the recordings need to be converted for the T series to play them. There's current discussion of that here. The conversion will be needed to play them on pretty much anything other than a Beyonwiz DP.

Thanks. The files copied fine.

Offtopic - but ultimately related:
Opening up - i think i can see the problem - two capacitors are leaking. That's pretty bad, i've got a 30 year old computer whose caps aren't leaking :(

I'm happy to attempt repair myself (got nothing to lose if i fail). If you know, should the caps be replaced with a different spec or should i replace like for like? Is it a design problem because i've had 3 powersupplies fail with the 0000 error over my ownership of the older DP Wizzes.

Use like for like. The specs are correct, is just the caps were cheap and nasty. Did you have Warkus repair them in the past?

Follow the directions in Warkus's power supply repair thread. Pick the thread that is appropriate to your power supply from here.

Tablet this time ;).
The phone has been replaced in the last week, but the old Nexus 7 tablet is on its last legs. I can't blame the hardware, since it is mostly down to the predictive text software, but the touch digitiser is pretty much stuffed too.

Original post has been corrected ;).

Thanks. I think i've found the appropriate thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7259

My original P2 failed after only a couple of months - 0000. It was repaired under warranty of course. I don't remember the circumstances of my second repair. In fact my memory is so hazy that i might not have had to repair it a second time. This is a different unit, and it's a factory second/recon unit i bought.

So it could just be twice, not 3 times. But i could swear... anyway. I don't remember.
