playing mp4's

Post by allie181 » Sat Mar 31, 2012 13:31

So it seems avi's are on the way out and a lot of files are now in mp4 format. My DP-lite doesn't seem to play mp4. What is the best way to convert the files to a format I can play on my DP-lite?

Thanls in advance

Best you post a MediaInfo report (text) http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download on one of your unplayable MP4's .There are plenty of programs around to convert MP4 to AVI
but really most MP4's should play as long as they don't have excessive bit rates etc .

AVI's are giving way to MKV as this container can have multiple languages, subtitles and chapters just like DVD's - as far as all BW's are concerned MKV's need to have only a video track and one audio track and resolution max around 720p

I think it is this Codec ID : isom there are a number of references to this on DOOM and a few other forums, in fact I think it has cropped up on this forum before.. My Popcorn C200 will play files like this but not for the BW.

I would either re-encode it to avi or you could try putting it in a MKV container - use MKVMerge GUI. The number of reference frames (5) should be 3 for the BW to be safe.

Whoever encoded this really went to town on the options
Encoding settings : cabac=1 / ref=5 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x3:0x113 / me=umh / subme=8 / psy=1 / psy_rd=1.00:0.00 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=1 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / fast_pskip=1 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=12 / sliced_threads=0 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / interlaced=0 / bluray_compat=0 / constrained_intra=0 / bframes=3 / b_pyramid=2 / b_adapt=2 / b_bias=0 / direct=3 / weightb=1 / open_gop=0 / weightp=2 / keyint=250 / keyint_min=25 / scenecut=40 / intra_refresh=0 / rc_lookahead=50 / rc=crf / mbtree=1 / crf=21.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=0 / qpmax=69 / qpstep=4 / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00

Interesting as I have a file with those two settings the same and it plays fine.

The bitrate is lower but I will post the details so they can be compared.

The only problems I have are that the file is slow to respond to jumps.

Gully do you have a DP Lite? I don't know which version of DP Lite or DP Lite i that Alie181 has but from memory don't they have a different firmware sequence ie 05 or 07 ? maybe that has something to do with the problem. In reality a lot of encoders do whiz bang thins to save a few bytes or squeeze a bit more resolution with the result the file will only play smoothly on a computer.

I used mkvmerge GUI. My wiz was able to play the file (i.e. no "unsupported format" message) however the screen was black with 2 grey vertical lines that were shaking (it looked like a frame).

Is there a setting I needed to change in mkvmerge GUI. Sorry, I'm new to mp4 files. Just got used to processing avi files through avidemux so they'd play on my wiz and now things are changing again :(

No changes other than to check that header compression is set to none. In mkvmerge
go to extras after highlighting the video track and make sure compression is set to none and then do the audio track. I have only seen the description you give of no image and just a grey screen on VLC not in the BW.

Until a faster non re-encoding solution can be found I would run it through Handbrake to make another MP4 file but select the preset under regular "normal". This will re-encode the whole thing but that setting does work on my P1. Reference frames in this setting are 3 which is a nice safe setting.....

The DP-Lite i certainly runs the usual 01.07 firmware sequence. I doubt that the Lite is different.

If you want to experiment a bit then try tsMuxerGUI to convert the mp4 to either TS or M2TS - it's quite quick, a bit like MKVmerge.

I would try it but I haven't any mp4 files that fits the parameters of your title.

Thanks netmask, I'll give that a try. MKVmerge seems to cause the sound to be slightly out of sync :(

tsMuxerGUI to TS worked much better, thanks netmask. No synch issues and the wiz seemed to like that file type better.

Thanks! :D

But a TS file will not resume on the Wiz from where stopped.

A MKV would be better if you can get it to work. They do resume from where stopped. If you have a recent version of mkvmerge GUI, check the box against "Disable header removal compression for audio and video tracks by default" under file menu|Options|mmg tab. You don't then need to fiddle with compression settings on the video and audio tracks.

What makes you say this? TS files stop and resume fine for me on my DP-S1 running 01.05.350.

Not on a P2 (f/w 350), and from what I understand, a DP-lite.

Well that is most interesting. Testing the same file under 01.07.350 I am asked to resume playing at the last location but playback always starts at the beginning. It looks like we have a new bug to be listed for 01.07.350.

I could be wrong, but i don't think this behaviour was any different with earlier versions of the firmware for the P2.

A double pity because the P2 can play 1080p encoded material in a TS container, even though output is limited to a max of 1080i. Also, while I haven't tested this, the TS container might be more tolerant than a MKV of carrying a subtitle track as well as video and audio.
