Recommended SKIP settings

Post by np » Wed Dec 10, 2008 14:42

Hi Guys,

I know its new and i have seen some comments in other topics, but I thought it would be good if we can see what settings everybody is using on the new skip functions in a single topic for us newbies to try out ?

Thanks!
Nick

I'm currently using:

Up: +120 seconds
Down: -120 seconds
Left: -15 seconds
Right: +15 seconds

I'll probably fine tune that, but I am so finally glad to have this feature. Using the previous 15 second jumps used to take forever to scroll through a 2 hour movie if I wanted to get to the end quickly.. Now it takes no time with 2 minute jumps.

Maybe a bit late to say this but you could have used the up key and do 10% jumps to get very quickly to the end.

Hi,

I have found that these settings work best for me:

DOWN: -120 seconds

Regards,
Ian.

Select the one you want to change, press OK. It will swap between seconds and percentage. The Help bar item for OK in this context says "Change Units".

This was posted several times in response to the same question yesterday.

I already checked both pages of this skip thread prior to posting and there was nothing written "several times" in response to the same question...that I could see.

But if you are talking about somewhere else in 26 pages of threads then I apologise for not finding these 'several responses' to this question in a non-skip thread..... :P

I'll chime in while we're at it!

Up +60
Down -30
Left -7
Right +15

I liked the default 15 second advance before the update, but being able to go back half that amount really helps to zero in on the end of the ad breaks.

One minute advances on the big skip allows a much better resolution than the old percentages to find the spot I am looking for as well. The reverse at 30 seconds does mean can be a bit of a pain to "rewind" depending on how far back I need to go (phone calls/toilet breaks etc).

That's what I was just thinking. No two setups are the same. And only one poster is still using the defaults, and is the only person still using the % setting.

FWIW mine are set to:

Up +150
Down -150
Left -14
Right +30

Occasionally I miss the +/-10% as the +/-150sec can take a bit longer to scan a long way into a long file. So all we need now is being able to use the number buttons in playback mode to jump to a % position. i.e. 1 = 10%, 2 = 20% etc
cheers

Yes Please. But why not have number buttons configurable for minutes or %
1 = 1 minute etc 2 = 2 mins. Or if you like 7 = 63 minutes.

Still testing. Seems to work most of the time. The broadcasters may be trying to spoil our fun, as most add breaks are different lengths.

I'm sure the 3 minute skip using ProgressBarKeys (PBK) on my Toppy 5000 would most of the time get you through all the adds in one press, and the program would then continue :)

Now the adds are most often 2 mins, 3 1/2 mins, 4 mins, 2 3 / 7 mins , 2 8 / 3 mins - dam adds to channel NINE :twisted:

ANY CHANCE TO DEFILE CHANNEL NINE SHOULD BE TAKEN.

I'm not sure about CH9, most of the shows I watch are 7 or 10 and 7 are shockers! I guess their TiVo does not suffer from skipvariation syndrome :lol:

AND NO I AM NOT SHOUTING, I AM MERELY COPYING THE CHANNEL NINE METHOD OF CONVEYING INFORMATION . . . . . . IN THIS CASE IMITATION IS NOT MEANT TO BE A HIGH FORM OF FLATTERY.

Talking about ads....sometimes we line up a few shows remove the ads with VideoRedo and watch them from PC to the BW days or sometimes weeks after the initial recording.

Some of these shows (before 10pm) sometimes only have about 6 or 7 minutes of the program between the (varying 2.5 to 3.5 min) ad breaks during the shows. :(

Isn't there regulation around stating the minimum length of time between ad breaks?

Sorry to go slightly off topic.....

But to go back on again :D

Up = +120 secs
Down = -120
Right = +30
Left = -30

Forgot to add my settings.

UP +60 seconds
DOWN -30 seconds
RIGHT +15 seconds
LEFT -7 seconds

This seems to work very well (98% of the time), except if I need to skip to the end or the start of a long file (2% of the time), which takes forever. If we could get the number keys configurable, it would be perfect.

Up: 180s
Down: 180s
Right: 15s
Left: 5s

Up and Down are still useful for skipping quickly through a show just like 10% used to.
The benefit of +3mins is that it gets most of the way thru most ad breaks.
The original 15s was fine for ads, tennis, cricket but the -5s helps with overshoot.
Slow over rates in cricket are not a problem - one +15 for a slow bowler and two +15 for a quick - I can watch a whole day's play after dinner or a T20 in an hour.

Isn't there regulation around stating the minimum length of time between ad breaks?

Sorry to go slightly off topic.....
Continuing slightly OT, I save half-decent movies for later viewing. I've seen segments of less than five minutes between ads sometimes. A movie that occupies a two and a half hour timeslot will sometimes be down around one hour 40mins or so.

Sadly it's all self-regulation because they have ACMA in their pockets.

G'day,

Here are my settings:

UP = +90 sec
RIGHT = +30 sec
DOWN = -30 sec
LEFT = -10 sec

I originally had UP set at 180 seconds, but discovered that SBS had 90 second breaks at some times and 120 second breaks at others.

Also most of the commercial stations have 180 second breaks so that gets taken care of in two UP presses. If I overshoot, it can be DOWN or LEFT with minimal ads shown.

Changes don't seem to stick

Post by paulsinclair » Mon Jun 15, 2009 09:22

Hello. I am a newbie to the forum and to Beyonwiz having just bought a DP-P2, so you will probably see me asking lots of questions, especially once I get my Beyonwiz connected to the network.

Right now though, I am having trouble getting the preference settings for Skip to stick. Is there any trick to it? I have changed them a couple of times but it seems to revert to the standard 15 second and 10%. I have installed the June Firmware upgrade

Any suggestions?

Are you aware that there are two separate settings, one in 'PVR' for Wiz recordings and the other in 'File Player' for other media file types?

Assuming Paul is using the latest firmware.

If not, Paul, please update it as soon as you can.
