A guide to using ProjectX

Post by netmask » Sun Nov 23, 2008 12:37

I have updated my old document Screenshots of ProjectX for the Topfield for the Beyonwiz. Basically a rewrite of the words and dropping off a few specific Topfield screenshots as well as inputs from a variety of sources including DOOM.org - a site that is worth visiting if you have editing problems.

Many thanks to Peteru who suggested Openwiz and for uploading the file to http://www.openwiz.org/wiki/ProjectX where it lives - it's an open document and can be edited an added to within the terms and conditions of OpenWiz.org. I have already tidied it up a bit and will continue to update it as necessary.

ProjectX is the only software package that demuxes all streams, audio, video and subtitles and also fixes a number of transmission errors when used in the demux option - it is a swiss army knife for most PVR owners.

I have followed the instructions using projectx but the viedo has no sound. Any pointers to a likely problem would be appreciated.

Netmask,

Please see below the log. Thanks in advance for taking the time. I have the K-lite codec pack installed. The media classic player provided with this does play the audio but nothing else plays it.

Thanks

Ron

I would suggest you transfer using TS format rather than the collection of tvwiz files. Once ProjectX reports more than around 9 errors I get suspicious!

However according to the log the audio file type is AC3 and it is there so maybe your PC doesn't have a suitable codec to playback AC3

There is no quality or technical advantage working with tvwiz collection over a single TS file for PC editing. I also noticed that you submitted the non video files in the tvwiz collection like the trunc file. You need to select only the video numbered files.

I will investigate the codec and remove the non video files. On the point about ts. I have the DP-S1 and the wireless is crap and so is virtually useless so I can't use filezilla to copy the file and select the ts format. To get the files onto the pc I used the WIZ to copy onto a USB drive. How do I copy the TS files to the USB?

Thanks again

You can use WizFX to convert Beyonwiz .tvwiz recordings into .ts files, either as they are copied from the Beyonwiz, ro disk-to-disk on your PC.

I'm not sure that Filezilla can easily copy Beyonwiz recordings from the Beyonwiz, no matter how good the network is.

Hi,

FileZilla does not run WizPNP protocol so I would be *very* surprised if it did actually work. WizFX is the tool Beyonwiz supply to manage Beyonwiz recordings on a PC.

Regards,
Ian.

My typo. I meant to say wizilla.

I give wizfz a go and see if that helps

Interestingly I don't think my issue is the ac3 codec. I downloaded an ac3 sample file from http://www.kellyindustries.com/sounds.html and it works fine. GSPOT tells me that the video codec is missing but everything plays the video. It is the audio that does not play.

do you have an audio editor like Adobe Audtion or CoolEdit Pro. You could load the mpeg file into at (menu item Open Audio from Video) and see if you can see the waveform. If so you could then save it as a PCM wave file and remux it with the original MPV file. Or try playing the file on somebody else's computer for confirmation. Or convert to avi using autogk - i will complain in the log if there is anything wrong with the audio.

PS in ProjectX you may like to tick the boxes in pre settings to rename m2v to mpv and m2a to mpa as more editing progams and test programs recognise these suffixes - makes no difference to the file.

Edit
I suspect this might be the problem in the log

patch 1st AC-3 header to 3/2 ch-mode

untick this box in presettings and run it again and see what happens. Normally this option was needed to upload a file that did have AC-3 3/2 audio to the Topfield.

Netmask,

The change you suggested made no difference.

I tried to convert it avi using AutoGK. Interestingly the log window says there is no audio.

If there is no audio I don't understand how media player classic plays the audio.

I cannot use wizfx because of the crappy wirelss in the wiz. Can you suggest how to get the equivalent of a ts transfer using USB.

I have tried the fie on another computer and it is the same.

Copy the file to USB drive or stick then copy the file onto your computer. Then open WizFx and convert to TS.

OK here are extracts from 2 log files of the same program running via ProjectX
The first is tvwiz format the file I transferred to my computer via my 100GB usb drive.
As you can see there are hundreds of errors.
The second log file is after I used WizFx to convert the tvwiz file to TS. You simply highlight the tvwiz file in the right hand bottom pane and a icon appears Convert TS or right click..
The number of errors are now 10.

Ron

Have you tried playing the file:

'C:\Users\RonHome\Desktop\2009-06-26_08.42.32_0000\0000.ac3' ?

Is there any sound in this file?

Netmask,

I have used wizfx to create the ts file. Unfortunately the same result. No sound

Donno,

Yes it plays in windows mediaplayer

I am stumped.

So you are getting no sound on your PC? Do you know that a PC has many filters and silly things that can break playback of files with unusual traits, like AC3 audio? Play it with "VLC player" or "The KM PLayer" and I bet you will get sound, as these packages use their own internal demuxers and filters. If your PC has a digital output, maybe something in your PC is telling the AC3 to go to the digital output and not the analogue output due to detecting AC3. If you want to hear it in Windows Media Player you might have to fiddle a bit with your sound card options (or motherboard options relating to sound) or download some AC3 codecs/filters, simply use VLC/KMPlayer to play these (or... convert the AC3 to MPEG1-layer2 audio).

Edit:
Hang on, are you demuxing with ProjectX? This will turn the TS file into elementary streams, i.e. separate streams of video and audio. As Netmask said, you will see the files as separate files on your HDD. No wonder you aren't getting audio. M2V is an "mpeg2 video" which doesn't have audio. You will see the AC3 stream is separated.
If the stream doesn't have many broadcast/reception errors in it, you can use projectX to do a "toM2P" to turn the TS into an MPEG2 program stream instead, which a PC will play. Doing a demux works best as it removes errors and ensures audio synch etc, but then you will need to remux again unless your authoring package supports elementary streams.
Netmask linked another package recently which you can use instead of projectX to do a file repair prior to authoring, called "TSDoctor" which will clean up errors in a TS without having to demux & remux. Give that a shot instead of projectX given your confusion about this.

Ron could you clarify which file you are actually playing? (not thetitle but the file type suffix ie mpg, avi, m2v etc)

After you demux any file and end up with separate audio and video files you then have to remux or combine them again as a standard MPEG2 file - that is the file you should be playing in your media player. Although it may seem bizarre that you first split a file into it's components and then immediately combine them again the process eliminates many transmission errors, however there are other options as Tony outlined.

Thanks guys for taking the time to assist. I guess I maybe having problems because I don't really understand the steps involved here. To me I should be able to pick up the file from the wiz and edit it but it doesn't seem to work that way. To answer your questions

I have generated files with the rename all mpeg-video to mpv not ticked.

It created 2 files
an AC3 file which
plays iin windows mediaplayer.
plays in vlc but with an error Unrecognized format for 'C:\Users\RonHome\Desktop\2009-06-29_20.56.06_A CURRENT AFFAIR_Jun.26.2009_18.27\A CURRENT AFFAIR_Jun.26.2009_18.27_log.txt'

the other file was a m2v file which
plays video but no audio in windows mediaplayer
plays video and not audio in vlc. VLC throws the
same error as above.
plays the audio and video in media player -classic (this came with K-lite codec pack)

With the rename all mpeg-video to mpv ticked it create an mpv video and the same audio file
windows media player will not play it
vlc plays the video, no audio and the same error message
media player classic plays both audio and video
After you demux any file and end up with separate audio and video files you then have to remux or combine them again as a standard MPEG2 file

I found the to M2P option and set that. It created a file which
plays in VLC
plays some audio and video but stutters and stops after a couple of seconds.

There were 2 errors/warnings.

Still not much of a success.

This is where I guess my knowledge is failing as I do not understand the steps

What is the demux do?
How do I remux?
What's the difference between an m2p and a MPEG file. Can rename the extension and it work.
Can you point me to a guide that explains the why in each step not just the how.

Thanks

Ron

Ok Ron I will go through the steps.

When you use ProjectX in Demux mode it takes the BW generated TS file that has embedded in it video, subtitle and audio information and splits it out as 3 separate files.
A silent video file
an audio file (no video)
a subtitle file.
In addition in this mode ProjectX corrects many of the transmission errors that can and do occur.

With 3 separate files what do you do with them? You now have to recombine at least the video and audio back into one file that a Windows media player can make sense of or use to make a DVD. That process of recombining is called remuxing.

ProjectX and subsequent remuxing produces the most reliable end point MPEG2 file IMO. you could use Womble or any reasonable featured MPEG editor.

However there are other ways to do it.

Get a copy of MPEGStreamclip a free program http://www.squared5.com/ and load the TS file into it and select convert to MPEG2.

This file should play in VLC, WMP, just about any Windows player. It can also be used in a DVD Authoring programs like VSO ConvertXtoDVD. If you are lucky and the TS file doesn't have any transmission errors you could simply use VSO ConvertXtoDVD directly ie load in the TS file as is. It will identify and use the video, audio and subtitles if there are any.

Another program you could try is VideRedo, likewise just load the BW TS file directly into it - you can edit out commercials and it has a fix file menu item similar to ProjectX.
VideoRedo doesn't demux or remux but works directly with the BW TS file.

Both ConvertXtoDVD and VideRedo are Payware retail programs.

It really depends on what you want to do with your TS files as to what path or level of complexity you follow.

Another brand PVR will not produce simpler files it's the nature of digital transmissions that errors can occur.

Welcome to the world of video editing!! :D

edit Netmask beat me to the punch :-)
ProjectX strips out all the streams from the combined stream (when in the default "demux" mode). It synchronises the two streams while demuxing, and fixes up any errrors. You then end up with an audio stream file (AC3) and a video stream file (M2V=mpeg2 video).
Many authoring packages accept these elementary streams like this, but not all do. e.g. ConvertXtoDVD needs a combined file to turn into a DVD.
Now unfortunately for projectX, it does most of its good work when in demux mode. When in toM2P and toTS modes, it doesn't appear to do all its repairing magic. Oh, m2p=MPEG-2 Program Stream, typically a file a PC with some kind of MPEG-2 decoding software should play with no difficulties. M2T/TS=MPEG-2 Transport Stream, essentially a stream that has similar properties (or identical) to that broadcast, and some PC media playing software doesn't seem to like this (possibly due to tables/PIDs/multiple audio streams/dunno... ).

I am not sure why you were trying to play the projectX log file in your example above (unless it thought the .txt file was a subtitle file.. but the filename was not the same as what you started with with the "log" tacked to it)... anyway, moot point.
You can combine the 2 separate files back into a file again (multiplexing) with something like mplex (command line thing) or a GUI version that I can no longer find on the net (and no author details) so providing here... http://tonyspage.abock.de/beyonwiz/mplex.zip (choose the "DVD" tab for best results).

I recommend another option now, thanks to Netmask, called "TS-Doctor". This will do any repairs of the (original TS) file and keep it combined. This file should then be sufficiently repaired to be playable with many things (try "The KMPlayer" and note my inverted commas... the new users FAQ has a link to this now), or turned into an AVI or DVD or whatever with other packages. And this does away with the projectX demux and then another package remux step, unless you are doing advert cutting or want access to TTXT page801 subtitles (projectX really the only option here if you want to author something with subtitles and cut out sections also).

But just a final word (third edit now as I re-read it and want to add bits): demuxing and remuxing are actually not difficult or time consuming steps. The process doesn't require a lot of CPU or time. The real time consuming bit is chugging away chewing lots of CPU cycles to re-encode the original broadcaster MPEG2 format into something else (like DIVX or whatever) when you want to compress the recording into say an AVI file.
Regards
Tony

Hi,

Are you sure that ProjectX in "to TS" mode doesn't do the clean up task? I was in a hurry and threw a very broken .ts file at ProjectX and set it to "to TS" mode and after a few short moments and a number of error corrections I got a perfectly good and playable file as an output.

Regards,
Ian.

Only in Demux mode I'm afraid. I'll post a log later of the same file via both options.

yeah, the toTS will not do a thorough repair, but it will turn a problematic TS playback for the Wiz or a media player into one with probably no problems.

Hi,

Ah cool. Oh well, it made the file playable quickly, and that is what I was after. :)

It is a shame there isn't a free, small, quick and easy tool to put the streams back together again.

It would be good if someone with German language skills at the technical level could post on the ProjectX site a request for a reverse ProjectX ie select the audio, video and subtitle and produce a standard broadcast TS file. As far as I know there is only a hardware option to do this for $$$$$
and a broadcast station piece of software similarly $$$$ and not even a demo mode version :(

Hi Netmask,

Again the language barrier is an issue but it would be great if the authors of TSDoctor could fix and improve their program to do all the stream fixes that ProjectX can do.

(I have a very broken .TS file that ProjectX made short work on making playable but TSDoctor struggled with for 3 days (before I gave up and terminated the process that consumed all the physical and virtual memory on the PC)).

Ian.

Has anyone tried posting the request in English? I'd offer to try in German, but my once-passable German is now very rusty.

Catch22 you need at least basic German to set up an account at http://forum.dvbtechnics.info/ I think they are more stricter in the set up process than in the land of Oz and what little German I have is restricted to a few aria's from Wagner and Kurt Weill, very useful :D I did try sometime ago but didn't get anywhere.

Actually a remux to TS file, complete with entering page number for subs, program would be useful as a test program for PVR manufactures - hint BW

Hi Netmask,

*SNAP*!!!

I was just preparing a post for this thread and was going to mention the OOZOON website. I was about to ask people what version of ProjectX they were using. Version 00.90.04.00.B30 (21-May-2009) is the latest build. The only site I could find that has a compiled and ready to use build of this latest version is at http://www.oozoon.de/main_en.html . This latest version of ProjectX is here. This newest build looks and works quite differently (and better) from the older builds.

I wonder if different people are seeing different results from ProjectX because they are using different builds. :?:

Ian.

BTW, I have found TS-Doctor bails sometimes (well, complains of a buffer error: ES ERROR: MPEG2 buffer overflow error at paket $00242345(2379025>2000001) !)
So maybe not the ultimate solution just yet until it is as bullet proof as ProjectX.

Hi,

This new ProjectX seems to be a lot slower than the older versions. I wonder if it is paying more attention to fixing the streams (in "to TS" mode)?

Is there an easy way to verify if this is the case?

By the way, Netmask would you please consider updating the Openwiz documentation for ProjectX to replect the different UI in the newer/newest versions of ProjectX.

Regards,
Ian.

Been meaning to do that - soon. Renovating the house, about to take delivery of my new Burmese cat alas my four footed friend of 14 years went to pussy cat heaven in May :( :( , fixing up the West Wing for a homeless middle aged waif AND I'm glad I'm retired :D

I would like to find out what versions people are using so I'll set up a survey post and see what happens.

Hi Netmask,

Perhaps your update can include the link to the latest version of ProjectX. Then when people read the instructions they can immediately update to the latest version as described in those instruction.

Just completed a few tests and thisolder version is quicker and gives finer detail in editing
ProjectX-v0.90.04.00.b06-20060819 The downside to this version is the UI is not scalable like the versions immediately following. However it is quite practical on my 22" 16:9 display.

Not sure that the update to b31 has anything in it for Australian DVB. I have a really ancient version that works as well as the recent versions. Using Google translate I bolded a couple of items in the change log.

Maybe the control characters in the subtitles is causing problems in Germany as well?

The item about teletext seems to me to be more likely about a bug fix in the interpretation of teletext control characters than about the problem of leading control characters in the EIT EPG that we see in the SBS FTA EPG. Teletext control characters have the same value range as ASCII control characters (0x00-0x1f), but have different interpretations.

I think "Zeichensteuring" means more "control of or by characters" than "control character(s)", which I think would probably be "Steuerzeichen".
