How to pronounce Beyonwiz

Post by DaveR » Fri Oct 19, 2007 21:06

Some people new to the brand incorrectly pronounce it as 'bay-on-wiz'

Since the company's name is derived from the two words 'beyond' and 'wizard' (i.e. beyond wizardry - loosely translated to mean 'better than the best')
it should be pronounced as 'be-yon-wiz'

My son (age 20) insists on calling it "The BaconWiz". I tend to call it "The Wiz" to match "The Toppy".

Ours is called "Dave" after the guy at HN that sold it to us. Our HTPC is Sheldon, our evaporative airconditioner - Jason, refrigerative aircon - Wozza. We sold Amy (Toshi J35) to my brother in law, and Mick (pio DVD Rec) to our friends.

It's all much easier this way. Somtime we have a discussion along the lines of "should we watch something on Dave or Sheldon, and it's too humid to have Jase on, we should probably turn him off and put Wozza on.

Hang on. Since everything else is named after the person who sold it to you shouldn't your wife be called whatever her father's first name is?

BTW if you shopped at the local pub you'd have stuff called chopper, slasher, and killer.

Not really, just having some fun with words and what some folk want to do with their BW.

My only serious problem with the BW at the moment is that since 1.05.215, my H1 no longer talks to my test HDD, but that only affects my testing, not actual use.

hi,

we have the "upstairs wizzer", the "main wizzer" and the "lounge-room wizzer" (nb: main wizzer is the 1st one we got, is the S1 and is in the dining room)

Giving them names seems cute but I think a bit confusing for me, so generally they are collectively referred to as "the wizzers"

I cannot imagine having a house full of gadgets with people names.... ever hear that song? "they're coming to take me away ha ha" :P

Yes, I thought I caught a waft of spiced ham, too.

I had another look at maryjohn's posts, and they're borderline. Banning the account was discussed at the time, and left as "wait and see".

In what way? The previous poster in the topic, anajames, also looks a bit spam-like, and so do some of her other posts, but the usual links off to other stuff never eventuated.

The report of it as spam also says that it might be a precursor to a stream of spam, but spammers generally seem to only use an account for a single round of spamming, and if they return, like the one that's been spouting Portugese(?) gibberish recently, they use new accounts for each new round.

If the post was just a test to see whether the bot works on the site, the spammer already has the information they need. No dodgy links were posted by either, and there are no such links in their profiles, either.

Hi Peter. I think you answered your own question. Same generic format as anajames and maryjohns. Poor command of English and given it merely repeats an earlier post, who amongst really thinks the Beyonce reference is in any way accurate, likely or maybe humerous. But, as you note, it was devoid of the usual crap links which posts I frequently report. Hope you're right on this one too.

I often notice in the early hours of the morning that I am the only registered user but there are up to 18 guests active on the site. There is a high correlation to new spam posts and those hours (daytime elsewhere in the world).

I don't disagree that it may be spam-related. But that's all a bit of a thin reason to delete posts or ban accounts. I'm not going of start deleting posts on the basis of a poor command of English, and posts at what I'd consider odd hours of the day are made by legitimate (and often fairly frequent) posters.

These sort of posts are pretty infrequent, unlike the rubbish that I have no pause at all in deleting.

The Key issue is that it is the very first post and an echo.

Not yet ripe for a ban yet but warrants closer inspection. If we used "moderated first post protection", then for this post I would be bumping the new post moderation count.

I think Ian has captured my intent here. Things which are undoubtedly spam I report. This one though just " looks sus", by which I meant "watch and be prepared to act" (to borrow from our local rural fire service). Hence I posted rather than reporting, encouraged by earlier similar posts.

So sorry prl if I was unclear - it was not my expectation that you necessarily ban them immediately but rather, you would exercise your discretion if you thought it warranted. Let's leave it there.

It's probably a spammer, since the posting IP is registered to an ISP in Houston, Texas. Or a VPN user with minimal clue.

I agree that setting the default policy to have the first post (or three) moderated would introduce enough resistance to discourage a large proportion of spammers. Better captcha wouldn't go astray either.
