What model Beyonwiz? Which firmware version? Do you have any USB HDDs connected?

The most common cause of this is when a V2 is started with the normal recording HDD is connected to the USB3 port and a FAT32-formatted drive connected to the USB2 port. If that's the case, shut down the V2, disconnect the FAT32 drive and restart the V2. If you want to the FAT32 device, plug it in when the V2 is up and running, and make sure that you don't restart the V2 with the FAT32 drive still connected.

And please put the text of longer error messages in the body of your post, not in the title.

I disconnected the fat32 drive and rebooted but it is still occurring and it is now frozen on the epg with the spinning loading wheel.

The message only appears when the hard drive is connected.

Firmware is actually 20190623

If that's your only HDD, then it should not be formatted as FAT32.
It should be formatted as ext4 by the V2.

This will then make it unreadable if you plugged it into a Windows PC though, but FAT32 lacks the features required for advanced timeshift operations.

It is formatted as ext4 by the v2.
The only fat32 was the extra tuner bsb which I have removed.

I have been successfully using the hdd since June 2019.

Although I can access the files on the hdd, is it possible that there is a problem with the hdd itself and may beed replacing?

I just keep getting the spinning loading wheel and nothing else is responsive until I reboot and then it keeps happening about a minute after rebooting.

To clarify:
Does the "Creating hard link to timeshift file failed!" still appear now that the WD drive is the only one connected?

Does it go into the stalled "spinner" state only if you go into the EPG (as seemed to be implied in your earlier post), or does it stall after about a minute, no matter what you do?

And:
Do you use the IceTV EPG or the broadcast EPG?

Are you sure that the WD HDD has been formatted as ext4 by the V2, and hasn't been left as NTFS format (which it was probably formatted as from the factory)? While NTFS formatted drives will work on the Beyonwiz, they seem to become corrupted more easily that ext4-formatted drives.

Thanks,
The 'Creating hard link to timeshift file failed!' only appears when the HDD is connected and the 'spinning' occurs on the broadcast epg. I don’t use ice epg.
When the HDD is disconnected, the message doesn't appear and there is no spinning.
I assumed that it is formatted correctly because I haven't changed anything in 4 years.
Should I reformat? and if so won't I lose current recordings?

I have just attempted to reformat the hdd and a message appears:

'Initialising storage device...creating file system
51/100
In progress

However, it doesn't seem to be progressing
Is it likely that the hdd has reached its useful life?
It is 4 years old.

Purchased a new hdd, tried formatting but is not advancing from 51/100.
Under devices it says that it is 'not mounted'

The steps in the progress bar are the basic steps in doing the format: unmount the HDD, repartition the HDD, format the HDD, mount the HDD, and it can sit on the format step for a while. How long are you giving it, and is there any text in the progress bar that says which step that it's up to?

Devices are unmounted when they are formatted (it's the first step above).

If a new HDD fails in the same way, it's possible that there's a problem with the USB port. You could try connecting the HDD to the other USB port and see whether that works better.

I definitely shouldn't take that long. It's stuck in the part of the process that actually does the formatting.

Does it work any better if you connect the HDD to the other USB port?

It's starting to sound like a hardware problem.

A long shot, but probably worth trying, would be to try a different USB cable.

Are you able to log in to the commandline interface on the V2 so that you can look at the system logs and see whether there are any HDD errors when you try to do the formatting?

I tried a new use cable that came with the new hdd.
An error message has come up a few times which says to notify the bw forum of but it is so brief I have been unable to capture it.
I'm not sure how to access the logs.

Reading the recent posts on the forum it seems apparent that if it is a hardware fault the v2 can't be repaired by bw.

It's working perfectly well as a set top box but not as a recorder.

If you have a microSD card (maximum 512GB), you can try using that. It won't solve the hdd problem, but it will let you record for now.

If it's the black screen full of white text, that's from a crash of the PVR application that drives most of the box's PVR functions.

The log directory is exported as a Windows network share, and you should be able to mount it on a Windows PC (or other computer that supports Windows file sharing) as a Windows share, and be able to get those log files that way. The system log files, which would give details of HDD errors, aren't available that way.

Log files from crashes have "crash" in their name, and all the log files are timestamped (debug logs with system startup time, and crash logs with crash time) to help identify them.

Information for anyone else who may have this problem in the future.

Having no computer, I tried formatting the hdd on a cheap Laser set top box to fat3 and then reformatting in the v2.

Success! and it took only seconds.

Now formatted to ext4 and working perfectly.

Fyi,I fixed it myself, as already stated above, with firmware 20190601 as I haven't been able to afford a computer for 10 years for usb upgrade to 20191106 and you can no longer do upgrades online, so I don't have firmware 20191106.

The first and only firmware I have been able to do was via usb kindly posted to me by Jai from Beyonwiz to fix a subtitle/closed caption malfunction back then.

But more seriously nothing in his post warranted your response. PRL was just suggesting another option seeing as you were saying you weren't able to download it for yourself.

You are pissed off because you all, with your inflated, sanctimonious and pleionosis egos, reflected by the ridiculous self serving titles you give yourselves, couldn't solve the problem.
