Cant mount DROBO anymore :-(

Post by vku » Mon Apr 06, 2020 22:58

I purchased Beyonwiz some years ago, drobo NAS was easy to set up. I have had a failure with tuners etc and after Mark (the living legend) sorted my machine which is running beautifully it seems the new bios can find my Drobo NAS, I can log in but i cant remember what steps i require to get into the drive again.

So drobo is logged in, i go into menu to choose movie path and get "menu doesnt exist"

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?

Can you explain the problem a little more clearly. I'm not sure what you are describing here.

Are you having trouble getting your Wiz to mount a share from your NAS?
Or are you having trouble accessing the Wiz's movie share from the NAS?

What new BIOS are you talking about? Do you mean the Wiz firmware? (not a BIOS). If so, I assume that Warkus loaded a new firmware onto the Wiz. What version do you have now?

And I assume this is your T4 that you had repaired?

The most common problem you would probably run into with a new firmware, is accessing shares on NAS devices that only support old versions of the SMB protocol (SMB 1).

Check the NAS settings to see if you can enable SMB3, or at least SMB2.1.

If the NAS can't support the later SMB versions, see if there is an update available for the NAS.

If there is no update available, you can edit the mount on your T4 to fall back to SMB1 (insecure).

But before we go there, can you please clarify.

If your T4 firmware update was to 19.3 20191106 then the default settings for SMB mounts was upgraded to version 2.1 required. Your NAS is probably set to version 1.0.

Two options:

1. Change the NAS setting to version 2.1 or higher.

2. Edit the Wiz mount setting for the NAS (assuming this exists) by deleting "vers=2.1" from the mount option field. Use Menu> Setup > Network > Mount manager > Mountpoints management to edit the NAS mount.

Aw snap! MrQuade beat me to it.

Thanks MrQuade and Paul,

Your both correct!

In response, yes firmware (brain fade) but cant confirm / find where its listed and WizT4. I was trying to mount a share...
NAS setting to 1.0 and hey presto, I could see my files
Unfortunately it now opens the file a plays stops/freezes, plays 10 seconds, freezes....

Very frustrating as the old firmware worked perfectly.

So, next question, any ideas re playback?

both a wired though my router and playback from PC/MAC are fine

Again, thanks for your help

For the firmware version, from live TV - MENU>>Information>>About. The version is shown in the 'Revision' or 'Last Upgrade' field (field is firmware dependent).

Does the same thing happen if you copy the file to the T4's HDD and then play it? Or play it from a USB drive attached to the T4?
i.e. rule out the network.

Once you are sure the network is ok, the next suspect is corrupt firmware. Depending on the version currently installed, you may have either an easy or more complicated path to a fix.

We will need to know both the firmware version and the NAS SMB setting to give you advice.

And have you tried playing that file previous to the update? If it is a new file, it might be incompatible with the T4. Post a MediaInfo dump of the file if in doubt.

The new firmware will have some new audio drivers. It's possible that the particular media file has an audio codec that is only partially suported by the T4 and it is choking. I have had some trouble with the high definition soundtracks on some files.

firmware version 19.3-273-g6f501ae, prior to rebuild it played the avi file without a problem and it plays it fine when playing from its own drive.

I know its nework related, namely speed but cant see the bottleneck :-(

Try copying a file to and from the NAS and see how quickly it completes.

Try the same from your PC to the Wiz.

It may be as simple as a bad cable connection or a hung switch hub (I've had these too) that is easily fixed externally. Maybe a router reboot required.

However, although you have recently updated firmware, don't dismiss the possibility corruption may be affecting your T4. I know from experience as I explain later.

If you get poor copy/playback speeds I would save settings, power off at the rear switch for a few minutes and retry.

If that doesn't fix it I'd reinstall 19.3 by USB and do a basic setup from scratch. If it is still broken, power off for a few minutes and try again. If that fixes it then restore settings. If it then breaks you know a bad setting is at play. Restore from usb and setup (again !!! ). Hopefully this won't be necessary.

For no obvious reason I recently had severe network playback and internet access problems with the T4 which came good after I did both things - reflash and power down. I could read file lists over the network but playback was slow to start and would freeze up periodically. Unusable.

I frequently upgrade all my machines but on infrequent occasions one of them requires a reflash because of odd behaviour. It was the T4 this time.

To MrQuade, Paul_oz53 and Grumpy Geoff,

Thank you all for your assitance, I tried re-booting the T4 thinking "why am I doing this" and couldnt believe it when playback was restored.

Many Many MANY thanks for your help, having to set to SMB1 to view and reboot were the 2 steps required.

Would not have done it without your combined help :D

Spent las night watching a few programs that I have been dying to see for months

Happy Easter
