ext2 is a poor choice as it lacks robust journaling. If you leave the HDD formatted as ext2, you will eventually lose data - most probably the whole lot.

I suggest zeroing out the first 2MB of the drive and formatting the HDD using the Beyonwiz. Make sure you are using up to date firmware.

The most likely problem is that you have the volume level on the Beyonwiz set wrong. It should be turned up to maximum, then turned down with exactly one brief button press. Every firmware release has two log files, /etc/e2-git.log and /etc/oe-git.log that list most recent changes. You could start with that.

The simplest way to protect yourself would be to add the following to /etc/hosts on each of your Beyonwiz machines.

It's extremely unlikely that a switch would cause that kind of change in behaviour. Switches work at low layers of the networking protocol and have very standardised behaviour. Even the cheapest switches do the right thing. If they didn't most things would break. Look for the source of problems else...
